AIT - Austrian Institute for Technology

Research and Technology Organisation

The AIT is Austria’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) and an international point of reference in many research areas. AIT is a strategic key player in the Austrian and European innovation system, as it enables and carries out applied research for the market exploitation of innovative infrastructure-related solutions. The functionality of “bridging the gap" between research and technology commercialisation is a key aspect of developing new technologies and enabling an economic boom, and AIT’s focus. The organisation also fits perfectly into Austria’s innovation landscape thanks to its new orientation, which includes providing a research environment to help key industries facing mid- to long-term challenges.

Relation to DECIDE

AIT plays a central role in technological research on energy systems and sustainability.

Bath &West Community Energy

Cooperative

Bath &West Community Energy has installed 12.35MW of renewable energy, enough to power nearly 4,000 homes and reducing carbon emissions equivalent to the carbon footprint of nearly 1,000 B&NES residents. This includes solar PVs on the roofs of eleven schools and four community buildings, five ground-mounted solar arrays and a modern waterwheel. In addition to the installation of renewable energy, they have carried out projects around energy efficiency and energy demand management.

BECoop

Knowledge Hub

Becoop is a Horizon 2020-funded project that aims to put communities in charge of their energy generation, in order to create a fair and people-powered energy system. Bioenergy is a big component of the project, as it is an innovative and not yet exploited to its full potential energy source. The project wants to fight climate change, create jobs, mitigate energy poverty, lower supply tariffs, reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions, ensure energy supply security and flexible energy systems.

Relation to DECIDE

The project sees energy communities and cooperatives (RESCoops) as the ideal framework; "they can empower a more effective, fair, and democratised clean-energy transition, leading to an increased social and consumer acceptance of RE developments".

Bioenergy Village Jühnde

Cooperative

Bioenergy Dorf Jühnde is Germany’s first bioenergy village to be entirely covered by renewable energy sources. Most members of the cooperative are locals. The village also catalyses other projects in the neighbouring region, whilst investigating further sustainability initiatives, including electric cars and wind power in Jühnde itself.

Relation to DECIDE

Bioenergy Dorf Jühnde is a prime example of an Energy Community, with a local heating network powered by a biogas and a biomass heating systems bringing energy to the households.

Brixton Energy

Cooperative

Brixton Energy is part of Repowering London. They create cooperatively-owned renewable energy projects, which means that once completed, they become cooperatives themselves. These projects are managed democratically and benefit the local communities. Through their projects, Brixton Energy is able to generate energy, increase the community’s energy resilience and security and raise awareness about energy poverty and efficiency. Amongst their goals, they have lowering energy costs for local residents, reduction CO2 emissions and creating opportunities for local and responsible financial investment.

Relation to DECIDE

Brixton Energy is an Energy Community, and it counts three completed projects so far.

Bürger Energie Bodensee

Cooperative

Bürger-Energie Bodensee eG is an energy cooperative committed to achieving a regional, decentralised and renewable energy transition, with the goal to initiate projects for the production of renewable energy. With its own solar park, another solar park participation and active project participation in the Verenafohren wind farm, the cooperative offers a real, democratic opportunity to participate in the energy transition.

Relation to DECIDE

Bürger Energie Bodensee is involved in and has started various projects, such as installations of PVs and windfarms.

C4CE

Knowledge Hub

The C4CE Knowledge Hub is a community knowledge hub developed within Coalition for Community Energy, an Australian network of groups willing to transform their community to net-zero emissions. The hub is a place where users post their own resources and knowledge, anda place to search through resources, watch webinars, create one's own group profile and talk to people about community-lead energy transition.

Relation to DECIDE

The Coalition itself, and therefore the also the hub, has as a main objective spreading knowledge and resources in order to create energy communities.

CEESEN

Network

The Central and Eastern Europe Sustainable Energy Network (CEESEN) is an online platform created to facilitate communication and unite different energy actors in the regions.  With the support of the project partners and the wider involvement of the CEESEN network, organisations and individuals can start to design a sustainable future for their communities. The platform is a result of the H2020 PANEL2050 project (CEESEN platform, Energy Roadmaps and Action Plans promoting and supporting the transition towards a low-carbon community, training material and trainings) and will be further developed in the H2020 CEESEU project (project started in November 2020, development will be done by WWF Hungary). The CEESEU project’s aim is to produce training material and conduct training that helps municipalities to compile and implement the Covenant of Mayors' Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs). The CEESEN platform counts about 2500 members (organisations and private members).

Relation to DECIDE

The CEESEN platform focuses on sustainability and on energy transition in particular, and energy communities and collective actions, the two pillars of DECIDE, also play a big part in CEESEN’s activity.

CLUE Project

H2020 Project

CLUE - Climate Neutral Urban Districts in Europe is an INTERREG IVC project with the main areas of work being in conceptualising, planning, demonstrating and replicating local user-friendly Energy Communities. CLUE is a consortium of local and regional authorities and universities from 9 European countries aiming to increase the local and regional capacity in policy development, in order to facilitate the implementation and assessment of new solutions and technologies for a low carbon economy in urban areas.

Relation to DECIDE

CLUE is developing a high-quality toolkit for planning and the operation of Local Energy Communities, which can be used as a model for new Energy Communities and energy systems.
