AIT - Austrian Institute for Technology

Research and Technology Organisation

The AIT is Austria’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) and an international point of reference in many research areas. AIT is a strategic key player in the Austrian and European innovation system, as it enables and carries out applied research for the market exploitation of innovative infrastructure-related solutions. The functionality of “bridging the gap" between research and technology commercialisation is a key aspect of developing new technologies and enabling an economic boom, and AIT’s focus. The organisation also fits perfectly into Austria’s innovation landscape thanks to its new orientation, which includes providing a research environment to help key industries facing mid- to long-term challenges.

Relation to DECIDE

AIT plays a central role in technological research on energy systems and sustainability.

CLUE Project

H2020 Project

CLUE - Climate Neutral Urban Districts in Europe is an INTERREG IVC project with the main areas of work being in conceptualising, planning, demonstrating and replicating local user-friendly Energy Communities. CLUE is a consortium of local and regional authorities and universities from 9 European countries aiming to increase the local and regional capacity in policy development, in order to facilitate the implementation and assessment of new solutions and technologies for a low carbon economy in urban areas.

Relation to DECIDE

CLUE is developing a high-quality toolkit for planning and the operation of Local Energy Communities, which can be used as a model for new Energy Communities and energy systems.

EC² - Energy Citizenship and Energy Communities for a Clean-Energy Transition

H2020 Project

Gathering insights from the fields of law, economics and psychology, EC² will provide answers on how to facilitate and strengthen energy citizenship. Knowledge co-creation with municipalities, energy communities and citizens will enhance the research to deliver recommendations that support the EU’s energy and decarbonisation goals.

The project will develop a clear conceptualisation of energy citizenship, and gather actionable insights into the optimal conditions for it to flourish. It places a special focus on the role of energy communities and how their set-up can help - or hinder - the creation of energy citizens.

The insights gained will lead to policies, tools and practices that will support the sustainable, just, inclusive transition to a low-carbon society with citizens at the centre.

Relation to DECIDE

EC2 sees energy communities as the key tool to promote energy citizenship, the engagement and empowerment of people in the energy sector. The project explores the relationship between energy citizenship and energy community membership, and it seeks to strenghten the inclusivity of energy communities.
