The project provides a clear handbook on how social acceptance of wind energy can be increased, as well as an online tool. Both are highly useful to energy communities working with Wind Energy and were developed considering and involving energy communities.

The Smart Cities Marketplace is a platform which was created by merging the former Marketplace of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC) and the Smart Cities Information System (SCIS). It is a major market-changing undertaking supported by the European Commission bringing together cities, industries, SMEs, investors, researchers and other smart city actors.

The Smart Cities Marketplace has thousands of followers from all over Europe (and beyond), many of which have signed up as a member. Their common aims are to improve citizens’ quality of life, increase the competitiveness of European cities and industry as well as to reach European energy and climate targets. GoiEner, which is part of REScoop.eu, has the goal to recover energy sovereignty for citizens by entering the sectors of the electricity sector that are currently liberalised, which are energy purchase and generation. The profits obtained from the commercialisation of green electricity among its members are reverted back to the cooperative, whose members then decide how to allocate the funds. In turn, the members are able to invest in renewable generation projects, the production of which will be consumed by the cooperative itself.

GoiEner is about the collective generation and trading of electricity, which makes it fully compliant with the standards of Energy Communities.

EWS Elektrizitätswerke Schönau eG is a multi-utility cooperative. In the late 1990s it was the first of its kind in Germany to take over the grid as well as electricity supply to the local community. When the electricity markets were deregulated in 1998, it started to sell almost exclusively renewable energy to its local electricity customers. The year after, EWS began to supply customers with green electricity on a nationwide scale. Nowadays, its activities also include the supply of natural gas and biogas.

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy Europe was lunched in 2008 and currently brings together thousands of local governments committed to implementing EU climate and energy objectives and to achieve European targets in the three main pillars of action: adaptation, mitigation and energy poverty. The initiative now gathers 9,000+ local and regional authorities across 57 countries, drawing on the strengths of a worldwide multi-stakeholder movement and the technical and methodological support offered by dedicated offices.

EC² - Energy Citizenship and Energy Communities for a Clean-Energy Transition
Gathering insights from the fields of law, economics and psychology, EC² will provide answers on how to facilitate and strengthen energy citizenship. Knowledge co-creation with municipalities, energy communities and citizens will enhance the research to deliver recommendations that support the EU’s energy and decarbonisation goals.
The project will develop a clear conceptualisation of energy citizenship, and gather actionable insights into the optimal conditions for it to flourish. It places a special focus on the role of energy communities and how their set-up can help - or hinder - the creation of energy citizens.
The insights gained will lead to policies, tools and practices that will support the sustainable, just, inclusive transition to a low-carbon society with citizens at the centre.

EC2 sees energy communities as the key tool to promote energy citizenship, the engagement and empowerment of people in the energy sector. The project explores the relationship between energy citizenship and energy community membership, and it seeks to strenghten the inclusivity of energy communities.
